Shared Server

Also known as: Shared IP

A shared server is an email server and IP address that many companies use to send their emails. Your messages go out from the same place as other senders, so you share the same reputation.

Shared servers are email servers that many businesses use at the same time. Instead of having your own IP address, your emails are sent from a shared pool. Most email tools put smaller or new accounts on shared servers. This keeps costs low and makes setup simple.

Shared servers matter because you share reputation with everyone on the server. If another sender hits spam traps or gets a lot of complaints, inbox providers can start to distrust that IP. That can hurt your deliverability even if you follow best practices. When the shared pool is well managed, it can still work well for low or medium volumes.

If email is important for your revenue, watch your open rates, bounce rates, and spam complaints closely. Sudden changes can signal a problem with the shared server. If that happens, talk to your provider about moving to a dedicated IP or a better quality pool. Plan for this before you scale up your sending volume.
