Migration Flow
A practical migration plan from SmartrMail to Bento
This guide follows a simple sequence: export cleanly, map data correctly, then validate before cutover. No generic product pitch, just the steps your team needs.
Stage 1
Export checklist
- 1Log in to SmartrMail and open your subscriber lists
Sign in to your SmartrMail account, then go to the subscribers or lists area where your main mailing lists are managed.
- 2Export each list as a CSV file
For every active list you plan to migrate, use the export option to download subscribers as a CSV including email address, name, and any custom fields.
- 3Export segments or filters you rely on
If you use segments or filters inside SmartrMail, export those audiences as separate CSVs and note down the rules you used to create them.
- 4Export suppression and unsubscribe data
Locate your unsubscribed, bounced, and suppressed contacts and export them into a CSV so Bento can import them as non-emailable records.
- 5Document key automations and email templates
Open your welcome, abandoned cart, and other automations, then copy or export the email content and note triggers, delays, and branches.
Stage 2
Data portability map
Know in advance what imports directly and what may require a rebuild.
Stage 3
Validate and cut over
Treat cutover like launch QA. Validate your highest-risk paths first, then move sending traffic.
Switching from SmartrMail can be done in one focused session
We help you map lists, rebuild key automations, and validate deliverability before cutover so your first week on Bento is smooth.
Operator Notes
SmartrMail to Bento language map
Keep this open while rebuilding flows. It maps terminology and highlights what to do first during migration QA.
- SubscriberPerson
Any contact with an email address that you can track and email.
- ListTag / Segment
In Bento, you use tags and dynamic segments instead of static lists to group people.
- SegmentSegment
Rule-based groups built from behavior, fields, and tags.
- Automation / FlowSequence / Automation
Multi-step journeys triggered by events like signups, purchases, or abandoned carts.
- NewsletterBroadcast
One-off campaign sent to a chosen audience or segment.
- Custom FieldField
Extra data you store on each person, such as preferences or lifecycle stage.
- Signup Form / PopupForm
On-site forms used to capture new subscribers and attach tags.
Tips
- Export all lists, segments, and suppression files from SmartrMail before cancelling your account.
- Start by importing your most important customers and rebuilding critical flows like welcome and abandoned cart first.
- Use Bento tags to mirror how you used lists in SmartrMail so segments stay familiar.
- Send a few internal test campaigns from Bento to confirm tracking, templates, and links look right before mailing your full list.
- Keep SmartrMail live for a short overlap so you can reference past campaigns while you migrate.
Watchouts
- Email engagement history from SmartrMail does not transfer, so reporting will start fresh in Bento.
- Automations and flows must be rebuilt in Bento; they do not migrate automatically from SmartrMail.
- Make sure your unsubscribe and suppression lists are imported correctly to avoid emailing people who opted out.
