# Who Bento is built for

Last updated 2026-08-20

This page is public on purpose. You can decide if Bento is for you before you talk to anyone.

We used Jason Cohen's [Find Your Carol](https://skills.asmartbear.com/workshops/find-your-carol/) exercise to define our ideal customer. We call this customer Carol. Carol is a profile, not a real person, a gender filter, or a name to use in outreach.

## Carol

Carol is the CEO or owner of a business that earns meaningful revenue from its own email list. Email is the store or a primary sales channel. It is not a side feature.

She sends only to her own list and users. She runs an active email program, often sending weekly or even daily. She already pays for an email platform. She feels the cost when messages miss the inbox.

For Carol, a bad inbox week becomes a revenue problem.

She starts looking when inbox placement or email revenue falls but the platform bill stays high enough to matter. She initiates the switch. A marketer or technical teammate may handle the move. In a small company, she may do it herself.

She is willing to learn a serious tool that takes some setup. She can update DNS records herself or has a teammate who can. These records authenticate her sending domain.

## A short self-check

Only you can answer these questions about your business.

- Does a meaningful share of revenue depend on email landing in the inbox?
- Do you send to your own list and users, not on behalf of other businesses?
- Do you already run an active email program on a paid platform?
- Has inbox placement or email revenue fallen while the platform bill stayed high enough to matter?
- Are you willing to learn a tool that takes some setup?
- Can you or a teammate add the DNS records that authenticate your sending domain?
- Can you use an email platform that is not a native app inside a store admin?

If these describe you, Bento is likely built for you.

## Who else Bento serves

Event-driven SaaS and product teams can use Bento for onboarding and lifecycle email. They can get value from the product, but they are not the customer Bento designs for first.

Businesses with an owned list use custom events too. Event support is a product need, not a customer type.

## When Bento is not a fit

Bento is not a fit for these uses:

- Reseller, white-label, or multi-tenant sending on behalf of other businesses
- A workflow that only works as a native app inside a store admin
- Abusive sending, including purchased or scraped lists. Read the [acceptable use policy](/legal/acceptable-use-policy).

Bento is a poor fit in these cases too:

- You are testing email for the first time or send only occasionally
- Nobody on the team can update DNS records
- You want only a simple blast editor with almost no setup

## Why we keep this narrow

A narrow picture of Carol keeps marketing, sales, and product focused on the same customer. The product must still work for the person responsible for switching. If they cannot complete the setup, Carol gets no value.

## Using this profile for research

This page defines fit. It is not a lead list or permission to contact anyone.

- Mark each claim as observed, inferred, or unknown. Cite the source URL and date.
- Do not assert private facts about deliverability, revenue, platform spend, list size, DNS ability, or job risk without direct evidence.
- Do not invent thresholds, titles, geographies, or fit scores.
- If you observe a use listed under "When Bento is not a fit," stop. Send uncertain records for human review.
- Outreach still requires suppression checks, applicable law, and the [acceptable use policy](/legal/acceptable-use-policy).
